The Wheelabrator Millbury energy-from-waste facility is capable of producing 45 MW of electricity — enough clean, renewable energy to power 47,000 homes in the Town of Millbury and surrounding Central Massachusetts communities as well as its own operations. The facility uses up to 1,500 tons of everyday waste from homes and businesses each day as a local fuel to create a local-energy ecosystem that generates reliable, renewable energy for the local utility. By using waste materials as a fuel to produce electricity, we offer an environmentally friendly waste disposal option and reduce dependence on landfills.
Wheelabrator has served the Town of Millbury and surrounding communities as a highly engaged community partner since it began operations in 1987, supporting and participating in numerous Millbury organizations, including assisting the Millbury Fire Department with advanced rescue training, the Town of Millbury Bicentennial Celebration, Chain of Lights Celebration, Millbury Lions Club, and the Grafton Hill Neighborhood Association.
Wheelabrator helped to establish the Worcester-based Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center & Wildlife Sanctuary, the first urban wildlife sanctuary in Massachusetts, in a 20-year partnership with Mass Audubon, including the introduction and sponsorship of Millbury Days, granting residents four free visits to the sanctuary throughout the year.
Wheelabrator employees volunteer in Millbury public schools and other youth organizations, including mentoring middle school students to purchasing and assembling 60 desks to furnish two classrooms at Shaw Elementary School, and sponsoring local Boy Scout Troop 114.
